You sure can! That thread from bikeradar is correct. You really should get the bottom bracket shell faced before installing an External BB. You don't HAVE to, but there is no real way of telling if the BB shell ends are parallel unless you get them faced. And as always: Don't cross thread the bottom bracket. This is one of the most damaging things you can do to a frame.
