Cassette spacer needed?
#1
I've been overhauling and renewing some parts of my bike in preparation for a ride from London to Paris in July and found your site after referring to Sheldon Brown for some touring tips. My current problem for which I can't find a specific answer is as follows. I bought a pair of wheels with a freehub on the rear and separately bought a 7 speed SRAM PG730 cassette. Having installed the main body and the single additional smallest sprocket I find that with the lockring installed and tightened there is still a gap where the outer end of the freehub body is visible. I haven't left any bits in the box and my thoughts are that a spacer is required either inboard or outboard of the cassette. Can any body help?

Hi,
Me again. I went to my local bike shop this morning and the guy gave me a hard plastic spacer free of charge which I have now fitted and everything seems fine. So if anybody else has or will encounter the same problem the answer is yes you can put a spacer inboard of the cassette to ensure it fits snugly.

Thanks for the info john and welcome to the forums.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Yes the 7 speed cassettes need an extra spacer when fitting them on current freehubs.
More or less all new Shimano freehubs takes 7,8,9 and 10 speed cassettes.
7 speed needs a spacer (3mm).
8 & 9 fit straight off.
10 speed also needs a thin spacer but not sure of the thickness.
Ride hard or ride home alone!
