FreeWheel Lube?
#1
I am working on an old bicycle I have a new freewheel for it with a new wheel as well. My ? is should I grease it or oil it before I install it on the wheel from what I have read on line its better to oil it. If so what kind of oil should I use on it. This whole bicycle is going to cost me a bit more than it is worth I know. But its going to be fun getting it back in shape so some one can ride it again. Just about ever thing on it has been replace with new parts. As soon as I get it done I'll take pics of it and post them so we can all have a good laugh at my old/new bicycle. Its an old 10 speed back in its days.
My dad always told me a Sledge a matic can fix any thing.

Can't wait to see the pics!

For lubing inside freewheels - and also for the inside of internal gear hubs - I like to use Phil Wood Tenacious Oil. It's thick and gooey, but it lasts a long time and does its job well.

Grease the threads before you install the freewheel.

Easy way to oil the freewheel is to do it 2-4 drops at a time in the front crease, spin it a couple times, and repeat this process like 4-5 times. Then turn it and do the back side a few times. Note make sure you have a rag or newspaper under it so it doesn't get your workspace all messy lol. Wipe off the excess and your in business.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Thanks for the info for the freewheel.

Hey Surly - I know just what you mean! I've things scattered all over the house, but I know where they are (ish)! Cleaning up would be disastrous!
