Choosing a replacement deraileur?
#1
Hi all, my rear deraileur got caught in my chain and got pretty mangled. This is my first time replacing a deraileur, and I've found a few good guides on how to replace the part, but how do I actually choose a replacement that's compatible with my bike? Here's some images of my bike (an old Ross) for context: https://imgur.com/a/wNYqQkH

Would either of these deraileurs work? And how do I know if I need a direct vs hanging mount? Are there other things I need to consider in picking a deraileur that will work with my bike's system?

Thank you so much!

You should be able to do any Shimano Altus, Tourney TX, Acera, or any other 7/8 Speed.

Which one is all on you.

Thanks! How do I know if I'll need a direct or hanging mount?

Check what kind of dropouts you have on your frame.

If your frame has a drop down style, then you need a direct mount with a bolt. It bolts into your derailleur hangar.

If you have a hook style, then you need a derailleur with a built in hook hangar profiled for that style of dropout.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with what a dropout is - based on the images in the post, are you able to tell me if it's a drop down or hook style?

Your bike has a hook style dropout, but also appears to have an integrated derailleur hangar.

You could get either one. The style of the one that broke appears to be a direct mount bolt-on.

Be careful you don't get this mixed up with direct mounting ones that plug into the wheel/axle.
