Refitting a sturney archer wheel
#1
I am having difficulty refitting a sturney archer 3 speed wheel. The chain on the indicator bar is coming out at the wrong angle by about 90 degrees. I have clearly reassembled incorrectly but I cannot see a way of assembling with the axial rotated by 90 degrees.

Suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome Charles,

That part with the the small chain ("indicator spindle") should be able to be threaded/unthreaded from the hub by finger. Do not tighten it all the way into the hub. Screw it in until it stops and then turn it back out a little bit (1/4-1/2 turn). You will then you be able to align the articulation of the chain to the rest of the mechanism guide pulley/channel by turning it a little bit . I have adjusted these hubs (Sturmey-Archer "AW" 3 speed) dating from the early '40s-'70s and they all set up and adjust the same way. Adjust your actual shifting at the cable barrel adjuster connection to the indicator spindle. What year and model is that hub (should be stamped into the body near the Sturmey-Archer logo), what type of bike? Can you provide abother photo of that same area, but backed away about another 6"-12"? I am curious as to how that whole rear mechanism looks.
