What Cranks are these?
#1
Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a job lot of bike bits, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a few more details about some cranks?

I have attached a picture (via Link). But they say SRAM GXP II. I typed this into Google and i couldn't find the same ones online.

I know they are for external bearing BB's, but is there a particular name for this sort of crank? Also, are these for road or MTB?

Finally, which bits do I have to measure to see if it will fit my bike?

Thanks!

Andy

Definately MTB cranks, do you currently have an external bottom bracket on your bike?

Hi, I do not currently have an external BB. Looking into getting one. Do I just need to measure the length of the spindle? (is that what it's called?)

Thanks!

Not 100% sure with SRAM but I know with Shimano's external bottom bracket they come with spacers for 68mm and 73mm so you just need to measure the width of the BB shell on your frame and fit the spacers as shown in the instructions. Once BB is correctly fitted you can fit the chainset and should not need any spacers on the crankset itself.

I can not be 100% sure though as have not had a chance to work on a SRAM GXP unit yet but that is how the equivalent Shimano chainset works.

Thanks for the Info, will do that tomorrow. the 68mm and 78mm what bit does that relate to? is that the spindle length on the crankset?

Cool, thanks! So are all crank arm spindles the same size then? and you just use spacers to fit them correctly?

On external BB compatible cranks yes as a general rule, the only spacers are usually fitted between the bottom bracket and the frame, there should be no spacers fitted on the crank axle itself.
