Replace cover on Simano RSX shifter

My wife has a Trek 1220 with Shimano RSX STI Dual Control shifters. The left shifter stopped shifting. The shifter would move, but the cable would not extend/retract. In an attempt to repair it (and before reading this forum) I removed the front hex screw and "cover" (the piece that has the RSX label on it). In hindsight, I realize that it was not very smart. While removing the cover, the spring uncoiled and now I'm not sure how to reassemble it. I'm moderately handy, but reassembling this has me fooled. Does anyone have experience re-assembling the spring and cover? If so, can you reply with the instructions. Thanks.
