Blown tyre and split rim
#1
Hi, I'm new to cycling as of last December. I got my first flat a few weeks ago and then a second a few days ago. I patched the tube again and then Re-inflated the tyre but must have missed a pinch or twist in the inner tube as the tyre burst when I was about to screw the valve cap back on.

I then noticed that the rim just past the burst has bent outwards and split along The line running around the wheel.

I was wondering if anyone else had had a rim split or bend because of a burst tyre.

It's normally the other way round, the split rim usually causes a puncture.

If the rim is actually split, bin it and get a new rim. That's dangerous now, as the rim is weakened and a rim failure usually results in a painful face-tarmac interface.

There were some cheap rims about in the UK a few years ago which were prone to splitting like this if over inflated, they were fitted to cheap supermarket bikes.
They did not carry a makers name!

"face-tarmac interface" very funny. Tho not if it actually happened.

The bike is only a few months old and I have had numerous problems with parts not being as sturdy as they should despite paying a grand for it, the battery case has broken twice in different places and another plastic piece has shattered twice.

Perhaps it was the other way round and I didn't notice, the tyre went down over the course of the day while I was at work, it was okay in the morning when I was riding it.

If it's got that many issues, I'd take it back. I bought mine for £250 a few years ago (from a proper bike shop) and had no issues with it.

As far as I can recall, the only expensive bike manufacturer that's been having real problems with quality control is Commencal ("crack-tastic" best describes them, my mate had no less than THREE warranty replacement frames in the first year of ownership), but I'd be impressed if you got one for a grand that wasn't second hand.
