Trek 7000 wheels
#1
Hi I am new to riding and a friend gave me a trek 7000. I cleaned it up and noticed the back wheel wobbles from the hub like its bad bearings or maybe missing a race or spacer.
I was wondering how to find the rear hub components so I could rebuild the hub. I've researched a lot and cant find anything. I am sure I am just being ignorant so I decided to ask you guys for help . Thanks Smile

Hard to say without more details of the hub.

I would assume the hub uses cup and cone bearings. If so, then the possibilities range from nothing more than a loose axle locknut all the way through to disastrously worn ball bearings and axle. Typically, however, cup and cone bearings just need cleaning, repacking with grease, and re-assembly.

However, it could be a bunch of other things.

A bit more information about the year of bike or photos/details of the hub would help us to help you.

This could be such a mess of things.

The quick release could just be loose for one. Tighten that up first and check again.

If it's the hub (this would be second), the cone and locknut need to be re-adjusted and tightened back into the hub. I'd suggest you take it to a shop for this. Ask them to put some fresh grease in there while they're at it.

Have them do both wheels if you can. New grease in the hubs is a must for a new bike.

If you're in the US, Dick's Sporting Goods offers this service for about $30 also. That is—if your local bike shop wants more to do the job.

An excellent point! I tend to assume people check this but that's a big mistake on my part.

I deal with a lot of bikes that people have just had sitting around, and this is a very common issue when I get them (the quick release is loose). The hub being loose is the second most common problem.
