Very cheap way of making studded tires
#1
Lol I found this article while looking for tires. I don't think I would do this, but anyways I will share this with everyone.

Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

That would be a lot of work making your own studded snow tires.I would not even try this my self lol. Let us know if you do this and post pics of it too.
My dad always told me a Sledge a matic can fix any thing.

To be honest it looks kind of dangerous, for a joke I would make something like this for a laugh that is about as far as I would go.

That was the way we used to do it before they made studded tires. The screw method, not the chains.

I mad a ton of these as I was growing up. Not really an original idea. We took coarse wood screws for countersunk holes so they would be (Kinda) flat against the inside of the tire. Then instead of crappy duct tape, we used fiberglass reinforce packing tape (The same stuff I use today for rim strips). They worked like a charm for a few weeks, then we'd have to do it all over again. I still have a pair SOMEWHERE...I'll post pics if I ever find them. Kinda doubt it though. They were probably thrown out in a cleaning rampage.Big Grin

Sounds better and cheap then the ones they sell. I was gonna try it just for fun but lost myself into the other projects I had (Still have). Yours sounds better then the link jr.

Thanks. It took a couple winters to figure out why in the hell out tubes were popping, but the analytical process of 12 year olds isn't fully developed!Big Grin

Once we had the system dialed in, we could whip up a pair of these things in an afternoon as soon as the first ice happened, with the help of some liberated wood screws, lifted from Dad's tool shed.Big Grin

Well, I cannot complain about my Schwalbe Marathon winter (except performance on snow is... pretty bad). The price tag doesn't fit a 12 year old, though. One question: did you reuse the tyres and just redo the screws?

Yeah, the tires lasted about 3 sets of screws (That was almost the entire winter), but the holes would become deformed and irregular, so we'd use the same size for the first two sets, then increase the screw size for the third. After that, the tires we pretty much shot. But we weren't using $40 tires here. These were last years cheapos or off of a dump bike. Basically free. Who cares what the tread pattern is if you won't be using the tread.Big Grin

Well worth it if you ask me.
