Protective gear is a must with plenty of reflective gear on the cycle. Follow traffic rules, stay calm & hope that you don’t encounter any nuisance persons on the way.

Wear a helmet and make sure to use lights at night and possibly wear illuminated clothing

Be predictable, indicate your movements, keep your brain on and maintain your bike.
See and be seen. Be courteous. Obey the "Rules of the Road". Remember that bicyclists have all of the rights AND responsibilities of motorists.
Stay alert and always be visible. I wear reflective gear and use lights at night. I even have a lunchbox that is reflective.

I agree with many of he others that reflectors are a must for bike safety. Having flashing lights both on the bike and the rider is also good. I wear an armband with an LED blinking light, it is easy to take on and off and I can use it when biking, hiking, or on a walk.

To make sure that we are safe while biking is to take all safety kit & good enough to ride a bike .
