Changing rims

Hi!

I wanted to replace the rim on my roadbike and heard from a friend that I should do it spoke by spoke, that way I don't have to be careful where to put which spoke. I tried that and now the new rim has kinda an egg shape and I can't fit any more spokes (I got stuck after switching 18 of the 32).

(both rims are 622x15c)

Should I:
1. Buy an already built new wheel and be done with it?
2. Start over again?
3. Remove all of the spokes from the old rim, learn how to align them correctly and try it again?
4. or something else?

I have never trued a wheel before, so that would be another big problem.

I ride a lot, so learning this kinda stuff would be really helpful, I just don't really know where to learn it from.

Front or rear? Did you get the right length spokes and nipples? Your first time will always be a challenge. You need only start the nipple a couple turns til you get all the spokes in. pay attention to the cross pattern. Then tension evenly all spokes as you go. slightly elliptical is normal when starting to tension and can be corrected as you go. It is best to have a truing stand for this. Then you will need to "Dish" the wheel so it centers in the frame, This can be done by checking on the bike, remove and adjust and check again. I find even pre-built sets can use tweaking here and there. Since you are committed, Keep going. there are plenty of books and videos on the subject to get you thru.

It is a rearwheel.
I think the nipples are ok, but the spokes are a little bit too short (the old rim was a little bit "deeper").
With a perfectly normal rim, which has no "deep" section to it, how long should the spokes be?

Okay, Thats your problem right there. rear wheels have two size spokes, the drive side spokes usually around 2mm shorter. when you are replacing the rim you need to use a spoke calculator,..http://www.bikeschool.com/tools/spoke-length-calculator
To determine spoke length. to detailed to explain here. but you can google how to get the proper measurements to input the calculator. If you were replacing the rim with an identical rim you could use the spokes or replace with the same size.
