Safe pedals
#1
So once again the teeth on my Mountain Bike pedals gauged my leg. They are good in wet and in climbs, but dangerous.

Can anyone recommend good quality rubber edge pedals ? In 9/16 size that are not very heavy.

Anyone try these, that's about all I found.

Well George, an $11 set of pedals would probably be junk and rough spinning. Pedals are a key drivetrain component that people take for granted or just do not realize how smooth or not the bike feels just by having low grade pedals. Look at this link. They are the best platform for the money and are as smooth as butter. you can choose to remove the pins all together or replace with much shorter ones to give some extra grip. you can find them in a multitude of colors also.

Thanks PK. I looked at these did not like the pins and may be too slippery without rubber tops. Also kind of large. No China deliveries for me.
I like the basic design of the Niagara ones and would want something like that in better quality.

I do have a set of Wellgo on my road bike and they were a bit tight at first too. Still are. My old MB pedals are very smooth, and not high end. Seems most of the high end is for clips. May just put some split hose over the teeth.

shoes with crepe soles will not help George, Elmore. he wants smoother pedals because sometimes he uses his leg to pedal with and gets scratched up. Smile

I thought I was clear in my original post as to why I was looking for different pedals. Did you read it , Elmore?

Its the sudden get offs that get ya. Like stopping before going in a ditch. Putting feet down and hitting the pedal teeth with the calf or vs..both ways hurt :-)

Dear George,

I am by no means a "cyclist" but I ride my bike a lot. 26 miles per day, in every weather and road condition: sleet, gravel, rain, asphalt, construction, dirt, rush-hour traffic; you name it. (I commute to a shipyard.) MY feet used to come off my pedals at the most inopportune times as well. I ended up going with Power Grips and love them. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about being "attached" to my pedals, but I love it. Since then, I have put straps on all my bikes. LOVE it. Retrospec straps on Chinese pedals (Amazon), Traditional metal cage on another, and the Power Grips on an Italian pedal that I scavenged.

I wear steel-toed safety shoes or Chuck Taylors, and the Power Grips have plenty of room for either. I have never gotten hung up in my strap. I have to get off quick sometimes too.

I think I didn't understand...is stopping with your shins a technique? I thought you were accidentally coming off your pedals; or maybe emergency stopping and clanking your shins?

I have tried a few different pedals, my favorites are MKS Lambda http://www.amazon.com/MKS-Lambda-Pedals-16-Silver/dp/B001GSQVEE

What I have noticed is that some pedals are re-buildable, some are supposed to be re-buildable but due to lack of proper process controls in the factory, are not; and some are not intended to be re-built.  Any of the ones that are re-buildable, and have a Cro-Mo axle can be made to be very smooth - regardless of prices.

Back to George's request:
I have very good experience with these: http://www.amazon.com/AVENIR-Pedals-Platform-Spindle-Hybrid/dp/B008H2FVZW/ref=sr_1_11?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1441905345&sr=1-11&keywords=avenir+pedals&refinements=p_89%3AAvenir  they are all resin, so the spike will not dig in so bad....

And these look like a good candidate, and if properly assembled, rebuildable:

Thanks Nigel, those are some good choices. My beach cruiser has rubber block pedals, although not very sexy. MKS makes good pedals.

Its the second Risney, emergency stopping putting legs down, and it was the calf this time. :-))) do not have problems with feet slipping off pedals.

Did a MKS search and these popped up, no sharp teeth.

Gotta love it George, I think as we get older our skin gets thinner and pain threshold gets lower and the heal time longer! ha. I am my own worst enemy, why change now! Smile

ANND BTW guys I have relocated SE of Houston, so now I also have mosquito's to worry about and thin skin.

Something that was not a problem in California. I was amazed on my first camping trip at Big Sur, no bugs to eat you. None in Venice either...............Back to being food chain now. :-(

I hear that, you can't get more Texas than that! Hope the move went well and you are doing alright. The cost of living in Cali would kill me, but not a bad spot to live on a park bench I suppose!

Thanks PK. The move was though , could not believe how much stuff we had. Two months latter we still have unpacked boxes. The drive on I10 was fun, a bridge washed out behind us in a surprise storm so we just made it. When we hit 85mph speed limit and on cruise control I loved it. Nice rolling hill country.

That cost of living in CA is a myth. I hear that from people here too. Real Estate taxes here in Texas are a lot more than in CA. Houses however are like CA 20 years ago. All else is about the same , more cause now I need AC 24/7, and am paying MUDD Tax, for new utilities installation. Never heard of that before.

However the Housing market in Venice shoot through the roof and I could not afford to buy back in. Glad I bought 20 years ago. Now its dot com millionaires moving in. Venice is very happening and mild weather, loved it there. Now its time to be closer to family, get to be grandpa.

I bought these pedals for $15 I thought I can always use them to scare away grackles, if I did not like them. PK.....

They were the best conservatively U shaped pedal that did not have sharp teeth or spikes. They were made in Taiwan so that's good and were pretty smooth, like my Wellgo pedals . Some break in will help. The price was a mark down . I would have paid more for a higher quality pedal of similar design, but could not find any , but these will do . Aww my shin.....:-))
