Rookie tire mistake.
#1
I learned a lesson today about tires. I went to get road tires for my Trek 831 MT Track.
You cannot just take a 26x2.10 tire and swap it for a
26x13/8 tire. The inside diameter is about a inch different. Is there a simple answer to this? or do I need to alter my plan.

what is your goal?

If it is narrower/faster tires, I'd suggest Nashbar City Slicks  http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_175439_-1
which are 32-559, which are 32mm wide (and tall) with a bead seat diameter of 559mm.

It is best to use the ETRTO system of tire measurement, which uses the bead seat diameter (BSD) in mm.  This is similar to car tires, which also use the bsd.

I have a Nashbar City Slick on the front of my PDG, and a Kenda Kwest 40-559 on the back.  Both are rated to 100 psi.  http://forums.bikeride.com/thread-4940.html

yes you can, but you bought the size ISO. look at the tires closer look for this marking or similar 50-559 you need a match on the three digit (559) for example.
just as easy to read this link

there a few standards that get confusing especially on vintage 26in. wheels and tires

All of the following BSDs are or have been called 26":
  • 559 - Cruiser & MTB 26"; also called 25" for wheel chairs. Typically 26x1.xx or 26x2.xx
  • 571 - 650c
  • 584 - 650b, also called 27.5"
  • 587 - 700d
  • 590 - 650a typically 26 x 1 3/8
  • 597 - 650 typically 26 x 1¼
Sometimes you can stretch certain 584 tires to fit 587 rims.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm digesting it now.  The tires I am replacing are gum wall that came with the trek 830. The tread isn't to bad but the rubber is quite soft.  I now want road tires or slimmer hybrids. The only marking on the old tire is 26X2.10  We have a good bike shop in town (actually 3 good bike shops) with a large selection of tires. I will drop in tomorrow with the rim and old tire and get the slimmest  size possible. Looks like new tubes are needed as well.

Please note that the Nashbar tire is only available from Nashbar.

Continental has a 28-559 - it is three or four times the price of the Nashbar 32-559.

Kenda has 32-559 - they're twice the price of the Nashbar.

You will need new tubes also.

Shaping up real nice Elmore, I have been experimenting with the Geax brand, these are the 26in. tire by Vittoria. I am doing another urban Police Interceptor Model using the Geax Street Runner, very nice firm sidewall tire. I utilized today's style Hydra-formed double butted Alloy Hardtail platform with 30/40/52t chainwheel and 12-28t rear cluster. Pepper spray bar-ends and front mount Taser extra, Lights, Gps anti-theft tracker, Hd camcorder, Standard equipment! SWEET!! Smile

I'm looking forward to seeing a pic of that interceptor PK.
The bike shop I went to had some nice high end $50 26X1.50 tires that were noticeably better then the citywolf but at my age i couldn't pound on them hard enough to justify paying 3 times the price for them.

I just got back from a 1/2 hour ride on my new Citywolf tires and was quite impressed. They take only 36 psi yet give a nice firm and comfortable ride. They go from the road to the sidewalk to the dike very nicely. The tires absorb some of the bumps very nicely as well. They look good too. Plus the price was right.

Now I have to refuel my bike tank with a rye, cheese, summer sausage and sauerkraut sandwich from the toaster oven with a few potato chips and black coffee.

.... only 36 psi yet give a nice firm ........

You have to be a much much lighter weight guy than I, my friend.  Anything below about 80 psi on my 40-559 (26 x 1.50) tire is mushy.  I normally run 95 to 105 (100 psi rated)

On my ride to work this morning, I was following a young women on a fancy road bike for a while, then we went under a road, I coasted down the hill, she was pedaling hard, I passed her quickly.  Of course she passed me going back up.  Her tires were grossly under inflated, looked she had some wheel truing issues and derailleur adjustment issues.  I take a minute or so break on my ride, take my helmet off, drink of water, which on the way to work occurs on the other side of the underpass.
