Here's my latest work. 1953 Raleigh with all original fiitings,paint was in bad condition, so got it painted. AG hub dynamo with 'Perry', Made in England Chain & a fork lock in working condition. There is a plate attached to each side on front brake. What's the purpose of this? Can any one explain...

I suppose you mean the plate in the last pic?
Because of the angled shape of the westwood rim, there is a tendency for the bb's to be pushed outwards, this plate stops that and guides the bb onto the rim, it can also be used as a 'quick release' by loosening the bolts and dropping it down the forks to ease wheel removal without disturbing the brake settings.

You are right..these inner plates give very nice stiffer brakes compared to one without plates.
