Periodic clicking from pedal area
#1
Hey guys, I have a Merida Matts 40-D that's about 6 months old but now I'm getting a clicking noise if I pedal hard on the bike, it comes from where the pedals/front gear set is. Anyone have any thoughts on what it could be?

Sometimes bikes are not really lubed that well from the factory and most shops just assemble them the way they come. I would start by swapping pedals and see if that changes anything, check for side play in your crank, remove the crank and bottom bracket and clean and grease all parts including the inside bottom bracket shell of the frame and re-assemble
of course this would require certain tools, But I say if you have an MTb you need them anyway. If that does not work then your bottom bracket may need replaced or your crankset is rivited and is creaking.

I recently had a similar problem, and traced it to plastic pedals in colder (it never gets really cold here Smile ) weather. The housing plastic shrinks a LOT more than the steel axle as the temperature drops. If it gets bad enough, the pedal freezes up.

Hi . Did you get to the bottom of this? I joined this forum to research the same problem . A tapping noise from the pedals somewhere which only seem to start when I have been pedalling hard up a hill but then it stays. It is not present when i stop pedalling but curiously it seems to be related the speed of the bike, not the speed of the pedal revolutions

My local repair shop changed the bracket during recent service, but the sound is still there. Any advice appreciated

I had a very similar issue, a clicking noise when pedalling but not when free-wheeling.
After reading other forums decided to check out my pedals and discovered that one had the end cap missing and a gritty feel when rotated. Problem solved, or so I thought!
Swapped over with another set of pedals and went for a test ride - and still the noise persisted.
I then remembered some people had mentioned the seat post (as if!). Nevertheless, took off my seat and went for a ride - silence.
I then cleaned & greased the post holder and replaced the seat and no sound after a quick test ride. Fingers crossed it's done the trick.
Still don't understand how though!
