SRAM X5 rear mech

Hi,

I have a problem with my rear SRAM X5 mech. I replaced the chain after some use. When in low low gear (hills!) it does not sound very healthy around the rear mech area. I put back on the old chain and the problem went away? The bike is used for my commute so has done a fare few miles over the last year.

The obvious choice would be to put on new jockey wheels and cassette. I did hear that you should change the cassette when putting on a new chain, is that so????

Yes.

The old chain and sprockets wore together, replacing the chain and your resulting symptoms show that you need to replace your cassette. Jockey wheel wear is not consistent with the symptoms.

Nigel #1, you said 'X5 mech'. We usually read that as derailleur. It had me scratching my head but I think Nigel #2 caught your intent!
To add to what nfmisso said, and since you put an emphasis on "hills",,,
The cogs where you are getting the problem are probably your faves or, at least, often used? The new chain has tighter tolerances than the cogs that the other chain wore. New chain is wanting to ride up out of the cup via the 'ramp' that has worn on the teeth.

Yes derailleur!

I will replace jockeys and cassette. I am presently running a 11/32 cassette and thinking after a bit of web research to get a 11/28 just to aid the hill climbing slightly as I have a few monsters onroute to work! The front chainset is presently 26/48 and I would presume a 22/48 would also assist but not quite ready for a replacement. The cage is long.

Do you think I am looking in the right ball park with the 11/28 or will this cause any unforeseen complications?

Another thought, can I just replace the 26 chainring with a 22 and will it still shift up to the 36 higher chainring?

1) Think about gear ratios again: The larger the sprocket in the rear, the easier the climb. So replacing a 32 t with a 28 will make your life more difficult.
2) Take a look at the specs of the front dérailleur if it can handle the size of the chain ring. Also, when comparing specs with other crank sets, I see that the jump seems to be quite big between 22 and 36.

Consider a 11-34 cassette; and a 22-32-44 crankset.

sorry I don't recall if you have an 8 speed or 9 speed.

That sounds about right, small to big, not thinking!

Its a 9 speed. So will purchase a 11/34 then once chainrings have worn out will upgrade to a 22/32/44. 22 to 36 would be too much of a jump.

Hi,

Replaced with new 34 cassette and jockey wheels.

Still had the same noise. Then while riding noticed the chain was jumping on the small front chain ring. So replaced the chain set with a 22t while at it.

Eureka, problem solvedy! and a bit easier up the hilly's!!
