New brakes, old levers
#1
I have a SS road bike with noname brakes and I am looking to replace the brakes but I am curious as to whether or not I need to replace the levers as well? Most of the brakesets I see come with the levers is why I ask and I want to make sure if I can get a better quality brakeset that doesnt come with them. Also I have around 100 to spend if I can do the installation myself on a new set or I have around 60 to spend if I need the local LBS to install for me. Any suggestions on sets in this range? I'm doing my first group century ride next saturday and want to be as safe as possible for the riders around me and after doing a solo century 2 weeks ago on the no namers I dont fully trust them to get the job done if need be.

I recommend Tektro dual pivot side pulls; no need to replace your levers.

You need to measure the required reach: http://sheldonbrown.com/calipers.html

Depending on your fork, you may need to either get the front brake with a long bolt or drill out the back side of the fork.

I have Tektro R559 on my commuter; and they are fantastic compared with the previous brakes.
