how do I remove this cassette?

None of the removal tools I have are large enough. The wheel came off an old free spirit bike. Thanks.

Its most likely a freewheel not Cassette. Please provide some information. Any writing on it?

Take the bike into some indirect light,(bright direct sunlight creates deep shadows) put camera in daylight mode, asa 200 or so , ( to prevent shake) and macro focus.Your photo is a black blob.

Spray threads with liquid wrench and let soak overnight.

Most likely this tool.

I agree with George, it does look like a freewheel. If you do not have the tool to remove it you may want to buy one or take it to your LBS and have them remove it.

yes, it is a freewheel. There is no writing inside. Here's a better pic. The park removal tools I have are too small.

I would take it to the LBS and have them ether take it off for you or see if they have a tool you can buy that will fit it so you can remove it.

Ye it looks more like this one check the specs given for diameter and number of splines.
The FR-4 has 20 splines and is approximately 21.6mm in diameter.

Although your looks like it has more than 20 splines.


10-4 to taking it to LBS and save guessing.

Destracto method may be needed if LBD does not have one. Cold chisel and a hammer into a notch, than wack away to unscrew. Soak with "Liquid Wrench" first. You just may be better off getting a replacement wheel as the cluster/hub my have a unique thread too. I just did the wheels on 1985 Fuji del Rey and had lots of trouble finding the right thread cones. Good Luck.

I hate to sound stupid but what are thread cones?

LBS took care of it for me for a small fee. Thanks all. I won't try any more cassette removals unless it looks really easy.

The wheel axle cones thread onto the axle and hold the bearings against the wheel cup. It is the rolling surface for the wheel bearings.Look towards the middle of this page at the complete axle. The cones are the innermost tapered part. They tighten against the bearings held in the wheel cup and set proper preload to keep wheel rolling but not wabling..
