I just bought a used LWB recumbent with under seat steering with twist type shifters. I can up shift but I have to stop and use both hands to down shift the rear gears so I replaced the cable and housing with no help. What do I need to look for to get an easier shift?

Not a pro with these style bike, but snap a picture or two if you can so we can take a look to better help ya.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!
Test the dérailleur by hand.
It might be easier if you drop the wheel out?
Push the dérailleur towards where the big sprocket would be and it should spring back on its own.
If it doesn't then possibly the return spring is broken or the pivots are seized.
Ride hard or ride home alone!
Hey Fred! I know a little about 'Bents as I have sold a few and had to 'test ride' after assembly. I likes it!
If your 'bent is equipped with SRAM 'Grip Shift' rotary style with a model designation of MRX or Comp or like prefix followed by a number... it sounds as though either the ratchets in the shifter are very dry or (more likely) the detent spring was not aligned properly at reassembly after replacing the cable. I've been at it for almost 15 years and still have to hold my mouth 'just right'. I detest the ones where I have to break the grip from the stationary part.
Wheelies don't pop themselves. (from a QBP fortune cookie)
I did not put any lube. in the grip, I will open it up and check the spring and grease it, thanks RobAR.
