My project XD
#1
hey im finally back! well after my long break from bikes, im planning to do this project (ill tell you guys once i finish)

well i got couple of questions:

1) whats is the difference between a 10 speed, 6/7/8/ chain and a 9 speed chain?

and

2) pretend if i build a bike with single gear derailer, and the rear wheel got a cassette could i use a single derailer chain? (in this case i don't want to buy a new hub/sprocket for the rear. also im not going to switch gears, just gonna use a single gear to ride the bike...cause in canadian tire they sell a non-derailer chain...

1) The difference in the chains is width, higher number gear chains are narrower.

2) I don't know what a "single gear derailer" is, but if you have a cassette rear wheel you can make it a single speed two ways. Either just put the chain on the gear you want to use or get spacers and only put the single cog you want to use with the spacers taking up the rest of the room on the free hub. On option one, you might have trouble if you use a wider chain because it could interfere with the other cogs. On option two, you should be able to use any chain at all.

For a single speed on a bike with vertical drop outs, you'll probably need some kind of chain tensioner. There are tensioners sold just for this or you may be able to use the rear derailleur. But to use a RD, it needs to be held in place either with a limit screw or with a cable so it sits lined up with the cog. I don't know about running a single speed chain through a multi-speed derailleur. It might fit without a problem, but may depend on what you've got.

oh ok thanks!

well i was planning to use only one sprocket in the front and one of the cogs in the back. ill probably just buy a derailer chain (since im using a derailer) and just measure and if i have too, dis-link some ^_^
