Trek 7 Fork replacement
#1
My brother wants to replace the front fork on his Trek 7300 with a rigid Meridia fork that accepts a 1-1/8" steerer tube. He was unsuccessful trying to confirm the spec for his current fork. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Calipers, a bubble level and a tape measure are the tools required to measure the current fork to determine the required specifications.

Trek 7300 components varied greatly over the model years.

Thanks... looks like some disassembly will be required before he buys a replacement.

it is easier to measure when it is in the bike....

Ah, OK..
Anyway, if I could pick your brain further... his trek has a front suspension that has gone mushy and he wants to replace with a rigid fork.. any things he should consider to ensure he winds up with a bike that is safe and handles properly?

This one will most likely work:

It is a good idea to replace the head set at the same time; and the star nut MUST be replaced.

If the steerer tube needs to be shortened, have a pro do it - the end MUST be square with the axis of the tube.

More/different thickness head set spacers will most likely be required.

Looks like you spared my brother from some grief and wasted money. His bike is configured for 29-inch wheels and wonders if this will be an issue?

i think you nailed it....gels with my earlier observations......the ebay one is not suspension corrected since it is more for a road bike......my trek7300 is  more mountain bike oriented and the Nashbar in your link has an A2C length of 45.3cm....closer to my originals specs than the 37.5 of the Ebay one....

but specs of Nashbar says 26 inch in wheels? not 700c (i.e 28-29 in)?

You never said that it was a 29er....... (ETRTO 622)

The less information you provide, the less likely you are to receive an effective answer.

The Nashbar mtn fork is still a good choice with its Axle to Crown: 453mm; which is more than a Cyclocross fork with Axle to crown = 398mm

Does the bike have disc brakes?

Sorry for the oversight... no to disc brakes.
