I have a Dawes 1500, under a year old and started hearing ¨popping¨coming from the crank área. I´ve ridden the bike pretty much every day for the past 3 months since I moved to mexico. I now have some minimal lateral movement in the crank área and was wondering on lets say ¨average¨cost for a repair like this, if there is such a thing. I don´t want to get railroaded when I take it to the bike shop here. Also, in the future could using clip on pedals be better instead of my current straps. I am riding alot of hills and standing for a good part of the ride. Thanks for help and for the site. Golf Super in Mexico.
Not possible to give "average" cost for another area (and outside U.S.) for a yet unidentified problem. If both cranks move then it could be a cartridge BB gone bad or just loose - large difference in price. If you want some type of figure, then anywhere from $10 - $50 or more.
Depending on where the "movement" is it might also be that the crank arm was not installed properly, and has worked itself loose. The square hole will then end up round (assuming it is a tapered square BB). If it is the left arm only, you can get one from a donor bike (make sure it's the same length!), if it is the right arm: bad luck, new crank sets can be expensive. Worst case: needs new BB and crank set.
