Charging at campground
#1
I own a trek Domane e-bike. I want to camp with it. Many campgrounds have 30 amp charging pedestals. My question is, if I put an adapter on my Trek charger so it can plug into a 30 amp socket is it safe to charge my bike on the 30 amp circuit?

Many campgrounds have a 20 amp duplex outlet, that would not require any adapter -- that would be the preferred choice.

Using an adapter to connect to the 30 amp outlet should be perfectly safe if campground power outlet and the adapter are properly constructed and in good condition. The 30 amp outlet provides the same 110-120v AC as you use at home, it's just capable of providing more current.

I've seen campgrounds where the facilities were not properly constructed or not properly maintained, you can tell a lot about safety just by looking at how well everything appears to be kept up.

Good post Sue! I am starting to see more charging stations so it would be good to know what is available and compatible. As long as the voltage, phase, and current type (AC/DC) are the same you can use a higher amperage rated outlet. Standard load household circuits are wired for 15A max loads, and I doubt any ebike charger comes close to that.

Thanks for the responses! You have confirmed my research especially the caution on being careful with infrastructure in the campgrounds.

For anyone in the UK, the guy running the Cycle Camping UK Facebook group (and the contributors) are doing a fantastic job of compiling lists and a map of campsites in the UK that provide at least the basics needed by cycle tourists at an affordable rate. Extra consideration is given to the needs of e-bikes and anyone else that needs to charge a device.

It's a private group now (thanks a lot, spammers...) so you'll have to join the group (and Facebook, if you haven't already) but if you don't do Facebook, you can still access the Google Maps map.

That's very helpful link, @enkei

I will have to "Star" this message so I can use it next time in I'm cycling in UK.

Thanks again.
