Hello, bike riders!
This is a thread for RiderBag reflective backpack & spine protector giveaway participants and for an open discussion about bike safety.

How do you stay safe while biking? Can you share any bike safety tips?
Let's discuss it in the comments!

[To be safe while riding, wear protective gears such as vest/garments with reflector, knee and elbow pads, gloves and helmet. Check regularly the bike condition. Have bike lights installed (e.g. tail light and front light) and most of all check health conditions, never ride with and empty stomach stay hydrated and most of all stay focused and presence of mind. Eyes always on the road. ]

put light reflector behind on your bike, so car driver will recognize you're a bike rider
you can use light reflector on your bag, jacket or helmet also

No headphones or ear buds so I can hear all ambient noise, moderate speed when around others to increase reaction time and constantly anticipate what could happen so I know my bailouts at any given moment.

Never assume the person in the vehicle sees you.

When anywhere in the city, a flashing tail light is highly recommended.

I stay safe while biking by staying off the road! Where I live people in cars do not watch out for bicyclers.

I think sometimes we're a magnet for drivers in cars. They are looking at us as a precaution on the roadside, but I think subconsciously, that gets them to steer their car towards us intentionally. Just a thought.

I use 2 rear red blinkies. One on the bike and one on my helmet.

I use 2 headlights. One on my handlebars and one on my helmet. Helps me attract attention turning my hear towards cars approaching intersections from the left, or right I guess. I quick glimpse of the light on my head captures their attention.

Reflective ankle bands. The movement attracts their attention. Noticed this from walkers at night while driving my car. Imagine how notice a band is vs a tab on the back of sneakers.

Reflective clothes.

Ride in best routes possible. I notice other cyclists riding around my area on busy traffic streets high speeds with no shoulder. Almost as if try to prove a point saying, it's my right.

When there is a wide lesser traveled road 1/8 of a mile away heading the same direction but much safer. Never could understand that. As far as rights, it's my right trying to keep myself alive and out of a wheelchair.

@Mr. Beanz, those are great tips on running dual front and rear lights!

I always wear reflective ankle bands, and since I ride with a backpack, I now use a highly visible cover for it. I try to put a rear blinker on my helmet, but it doesn't have a great mounting spot, so I usually attach the blinker to my pack instead—right on top of a construction safety vest I wrap my pack with. I also have tons of reflective stickers on my helmet, wheels, and frame.

Truth be told, I still avoid riding in the dark. I simply feel unsafe, especially when bikepacking through unfamiliar terrain. I avoid it as much as possible, but I always carry all the gear anyway—sometimes even more than I actually use!
