I have a 52/36 chain ring, if I switch to a compact, do I need a different sized chain?

What cassette do you have? In other words, what is the rest of your setup? I've done it once and had to take out 1 chain link.

Shimano 11-speed cassette, I think it's considered racing-compact

Overall, you should be fine. If the chain is looser, you might want to lower the front derailleur milimeter by milimeter and/or adjust the tension on rear derailleur.
