Cable guides needed
#1
Hey there, Love your site! I've been wrenching for the past four years and I'm currently trying to get a job as a bike mechanic in Toronto, Canada. I commute every day on my self built single speed, but I want to install a rear brake on it. However since the frame has no cable guides I'm a little stuck. I purchased some stick on guides however they do not stop the cable housing from moving horizontally when I try to pull the cable taut. I've tried both taping and zip tying the housing but the problem still exists. Do you know of products or even home built methods to stop this problem? A front brake in downtown traffic is simply not enough for me. Thanks

You'll have to find something that fastens very securely to the frame so it'll stay in place. I've had good success with a unit like this one that attaches to your seatpost bolt.

It's not the guide itself that moves but the cable housing. The guides only hold the cable to the frame, it doesn't stop them. This product might help on the back but the front will still bind.

The link I sent you is a cable stop, it does stop the cable housing and not just hold it to the frame. There are similar cable stops for the front cable listed on the same page.
