Existing bottom bracket with single speed crankset
#1
Hi, it's me again, single speeding an old Fuji Absolute. I am wondering about matching up a new single speed crankset with the existing bottom bracket. How would one go about figuring out which new single speed specific cranksets would be compatible with the existing bottom bracket in my bike?

The easiest solution would be to get some shorter chainring bolts and remove the front shift components as well as the two chainrings you don't want to use... that's really all you have to do to convert the front to single speed.

However, if you have to change the crankset, take a look at your existing crank from the top (when it's on the bike). Your new crankset should match the old one's side profile so that the crank doesn't fasten too far onto the spindle and so the chainring doesn't rub the frame. I'd take it to your local shop with your old crank removed so you can try a few replacements. The mechanics there might have some additional advice/tips.

lewis
