So I discovered the saddle on my mountain bike felt funny and discovered when I got home that the spring suspension had snapped and I was missing a piece of bar. I wonder is this normal after 5000 miles of bumpy roads and trail riding, i.e. due to metal fatigue, or could there have been a flaw in the steel? The bars were about 8mm thick. Anyway after grinding the ends of the break down and re-welding with stainless steel rods, the joint has stayed intact after a further 2000 bumpy miles. I could have bought a new saddle but it was a challenge to repair the old one!
