ETRTO 590 (aka 650a, 26 x 1 3/8) tires
#1
Recently I have been looking for a narrower ETRTO 590 tire. In the USA, I wasn't able to find anything except 37/38 wide. I wanted something a bit narrower, and still have relatively high pressure capability. I have been using 90 psi Kenda 37-590 tires.

I ordered Schwalbe 25-590 wheel chair tire and tube - a bit skinnier than what I want, and 85 psi MIN, 145 psi MAX. I may still try it out on the front of my Miyata 310.

More recently, I found that in Europe, Schwalbe offers a 28/32-590 rated at 85 psi - just what I was looking for. Schwalbe USA said "...we don’t make any other tire that matches your goal."  I suggested that they import the tire they offer in Europe - no response....

So I ordered some from http://www.acycles.co.uk/ which arrived yesterday. US Customs kept them for less than a day, and no duty. Came to around $60 USD and change for three tires and air shipment. They are EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Here is the direct link to the tire: http://www.acycles.co.uk/schwalbe-hs180-rigid-tyre-650x2832a-beige-side-walls-1387.html

I have no business interest in Schwalbe, or ACycles. Just want share how I got tires more to my liking.

Not sure how my other post got there. I was in the middle if it and had to leave. I guess i hit the wrong key after I erased it. Anyway i wanted to ask Nigel if these tires were shipped folded or not and look forward to his report.

They were kinda folded to half diameter; more twisted in half.  They were not scrunched up, and when pulled out of the package, reverted to normal with no kinks.  Nashbar and Niagara ship wire bead tires the same way.  Never had any issues.

Ok thanks Nigel. I was wondering about that. Tire technology has advanced a lot. It would be expensive to ship them in the round. I know the Kelvar tires fold into quite small packages.

I've had bad luck with Schwalbe USA & their fold/spindle/mutilate shipping thing. After 7 or so purchases all my Big Bens, Big Apples & Racers now arrive twisted in a figure eight then folded over double. This doesn't seem to be a big deal with skinny tires but my minimum width is a 26 x 1.75. When I've made special requests that they not do it & I'll pay extra the response has been to fold the wire bead violently (you can see the hand prints) so I don't do that anymore lol.
I'm looking at a 26 x 2.15 back-up tire I bought a year ago & I can see exactly where it was folded.

And some pictures. All are on my Miyata 310, mounted on a Sun CR18 rim.
First the 25-590 Schwalbe wheelchair tire, rated 145 psi max at 120 psi.

Next the 28/32-590 Schwalbe HS140, rated 85 psi max at 90 psi.

And finally the 37-590 Kenda K35 rated 90 psi max at 90 psi

More ride testing will happen. The 28/32-590 is a noticeable improvement in responsiveness over the 37-590. The 25-590 is a major improvement in responsiveness. All testing so far has been with a 37-590 Kenda K35 on the rear at 90 psi.
