Chainrings - 44 to 42

If you replace a 44t with a 42t chainring (or the other way around) does the chain need to be altered?

I think it'll be ok, just double check the <a href="http://bikeride.com/calculate-chain-length/">chain length</a> after you <a href="http://bikeride.com/replace-chainrings/">change the chainring</a>.
