Spring in Rear Derailleur
#1
Hey folks - first off for full disclosure, I recently removed the RD from the hanger to get a look at the hanger. What I'm asking now seems to have happened after re-attaching the RD.

The bike is about a month old so I'm not considering worn out parts yet.

OK so the RD (Ultegra 6800) attaches to the hanger by one bolt. The RD pivots on that bolt. When at rest I can rotate the RD clockwise quite a bit. Just a little rotation counter clockwise. If I rotate clockwise and then let it go there is obviously a spring inside that pushes the RD back to a resting position.

What I'm noticing is the push back of the spring is not very precise. If I rotate the RD clockwise and then let it go 5 times, it would not return to exactly the same spot each time. If I rotate and then let the spring push back while still lightly holding the RD the resting spot is even less precise.

All this came into play when trying to make B tension adjustments after re-attaching the RD. I've cranked the screw all the way out and all the way in and the jockey pulley doesn't come near the cassette cogs. It seems like if that spring were "springier" it would be pushing the pulley up closer to the cogs on the cassette. General shifting is OK but it is noisy and it seems late.

So after all that my question is - is there some way to tighten up the spring at the RD bolt?

sounds like you might have got the B-screw end feature on the wrong side of the tang on the hanger.

Disconnect the cable, remove the RD, and look at how the B-screw interacts with the hanger. Then carefully re-install.

Also, is the chain installed when you are checking? What you are doing is useless if you don't have the chain installed through the derailleur pulleys. The tension of the chain will normally pull the derailleur forward to the stop on the hanger.
