Schwinn rear derailleur
#1
I am wanting to switch the tires from my Schwinn varsity to my Schwinn super sport. The RD on the super sport is a 7 GT Sun Tour, the RD on the varsity is an original Schwinn GT-420. I'm really fond of the RD on the varsity as it is the original one. It isn't an option for me to keep that bike though as the frame is bent. I think there is really no point in leaving good parts on it, so if it is the case I have to switch them that is okay. What I'm asking is if I will need to totally switch out the RDs or if it is possible for me to just take the tires off the varsity and put them on the super sport? This is my first time changing/working on bicycle tires so I am a little out of the loop, sorry if this doesn't make sense. The bicycle tire frame on the varsity is 27 in and the frame on the super sport is 25.

Thanks for any input.

Is this your Sun Tour: http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/SunTour_V_GT_derailleur_%284900%29.html
The 420: http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/Schwinn_GT420_Le_Tour_derailleur.html

The SunTour VGT is a more desirable RD.... but you can do whatever you want, the shifting is compatible. Please note that the GT420 can only handle 28T maximum.

The rim diameters need to be pretty close, or the brakes will not work.

Read this to get the terminology correct: http://sheldonbrown.com/ starting with the glossary.

And post pictures.

I would pull ALL of the parts off the bike with the bent frame, some may be worth something.

Yes, those are both the derailleurs I am talking about. I ended up installing the tire onto the super sport but am now having problems with the chain. My super sport is a 6 speed, the varsity is a 5.
The derailleur appears to be installed fine via all the information I have gathered so far, but the chain keeps failing off after hitting the lowest gear when I turned the pedals. So can an RD that has been used on a 6 speed rear bicycle wheel also be used on a 5 speed rear bicycle wheel? Still not so great at the terminology. Thank you...

A 6 speed RD should work fine on a 5 speed wheel. It sounds like you may just need to adjust the "limit screws" to prevent it from going too far. Watch the rear derailleur adjustment video on this site if you don't know what that means.
