Trike frame
#1
Hi. I'm new to this, so bear with me. I want to get a trike, preferably low to the ground, with two wheels in the front, and a lot of gears. My problem is that they are all too expensive for me right now, and I don't want to buy anything on credit. I'm terrible at building things, so I don't want to build a trike from scratch. I would like to buy the parts one piece at a time, as I save the money. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a frame for cheap? Once I get the frame, I think I will be on my way. Thank you.

Hi;

The MOST expensive way to purchase anything is one component at a time, by a factor of 5 to 10 times. Those of us who build up our own bikes do it as a hobby, not to save money. We enjoy doing things ourselves, our way, and pay a LOT extra to be able to do it.

http://www.terratrike.com/index.php is one of the most highly rated trikes out there.

Well it depends. Atomiczombie lists the equipment you need to have; including a welder, accessories and other tools; at Harbor Freight you are looking at $250- MINIMUM; $400- more likely. Then it depends on how effective you are at scrounging old bikes and parts.

I am currently building a tadpole recumbent from a KMX Frame Kit (http://www.utahtrikes.com/PRODINFO-KMX_Frame_Kit.html). I am at $1,400 including the kit cost. I have the same features as the KMX Venom (http://www.kmxus.com/venom.html) which sells for $1,999 + S&H. I am using a few different components...such as Avid BB7 brakes and SRAM MRX Twist Shifters. I rode the KMX Tornado, their entry level trike, at a bike shop and was instantly hooked. I wanted a few upgrades (like rear brake and front derailleur) without breaking the budget. I will post pictures when I finish my build.

THE 'bent (recumbent) marketplace is the classified section on BROL (Bent Rider on line). Trikes there can be half price. A lot of people buy a cheap one and later want to upgrade, so the cheaper ones are often for sale.
