SunRace 5 speed Freewheel removal.
#1
I need to remove this SunRace 5 speed freewheel for replacement, but I can't seem to find information on the appropriate tool - all I have is a standard chainwhip and the usual hand tools.

It may not be clear in the image, but it is stamped with SunRace Freewheel B0525

Do I need a specialist tool, or is there a workaround? (It being Sunday morning, here in the UK)?

Suggestions gratefully received.

It takes a chain whip & a freewheel removal tool and an adjustable spanner or socket to fit the tool. The tool shown is a Park FR-1

It engages the splines that are not visible in your photo. The chain whip retains the freewheel while you use the freewheel tool in a counter clockwise fashion.
You may find it extremely difficult to remove, in which case you can put the freewheel tool in a vise for extra leverage. As a last resort the old freewheel may be destroyed or cut away with a dremel grinder. I believe cutting the black ring will get things started.

Ah, thanks - until I used a flashlight, I couldn't see splines inside.

Couldn't get the Park FR-1, but local store Halfords had their own generic in stock.

thanks,

Yup, bit of a struggle initially, but put the tool in a bench vice and then it was straightforward.

I needed to get it off because there was a bit of metallic crud jammed in there - having got it off and cleaned it, there's no damage so put it back on.

At least I now have the right tools for the job in future!

cheers,
