Replacement back wheel
#1
Someone jumped on my back wheel when it was locked up on the road last night and it is damaged beyond repair.

Would anyone be able to help point me in the right direction to find out what type of wheel I need to buy as a replacement? I have attached some pictures but dont know where to go from here.

I loved the bike, it only cost me £155 to buy secondhand and I am worried a new wheel is going to end up costing more than the bike.

Apologies if this information is already somewhere else on the site and I have missed it.

The bike is a Giant Cadex ALR1

Thank you in advance

Well, it's a 32 spoke 700C wheel with what looks like a 7 speed cassette. Is the bike from the nineties? You might check the width between the frame rear drop outs (OLD), I would guess 130mm. So that should be fairly easy to find in the UK. 700C 7speed (freehub not freewheel) 32Hole 130 OLD.
If you're over 14 stone you might want to go to a 36 spoke wheel.
If you check ebay etc... you should be able to find something cheap. You can use the old cassette, tire & tube I assume?

Thank you 1FJEF, that is really helpful. I will measure the width between the rear frame drop outs and then get on e-bay.

I think you are correct and the bike is from the 90's, its a great bike so hopefully will be able to get it back in working order.

Thanks again

Just check it is a cassette not a freewheel http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html
Most used wheels need their bearings overhauled (see tutorial here) plus they should be trued and tensioned in my opinion.
