Problems from Calcutta - Fork / tube removal

Hi All

New to cycle overhaul and this forum. Apologies if my thread isn't in the right section!

I have a pretty basic MTB made by an Indian company - BSA / Hercules. The bikes been out of action for a while and I though I'd do a good overhaul and clean to get it back to being road worthy...

So the issue i'm facing is in dismantling the fork, where it looks like the headset is attached to a threaded fork (unsure how) that i cant seem to separate and remove.

looks to me like you have a steerer extension fitted, the black tube.
look down inside this and you should see an allen head bolt, loosen this, you may need to give the bolt head a sharp tap after, and remove tube.

Did take a peek inside the rabbit hole but no bolt :-( Also, the extension clearly does not run down the length of the entire tube.

It could be that the extension is simply a tight fit - do i got at it with a hammer/put the extension in a vice and try prying it apart?

Hmmm, looks like a 1" quill to 1 and 1/8" A-head stem adapter, like this:



Like Trev says, it usually has an allen bolt in the top.

Is it somehow fixed from the bottom, through the hole between the fork blades? I can't really make out what's going on that last picture.

@Xerxes: This piece, that you refer to as quill to head stem adapter (agree with the description) fits into the fork and is held in place by a metal barrier and rubber within fork. This prevents it from going any deeper than it needs to.

Not sure if this is standard on other fork systems or not.

I'm half guessing, because it's difficult to tell without looking at the whole thing in person, but I would suggest, that it is a quill stem adapter, like the one in the picture that I showed, but the top cap and the long bolt that reaches down the middle to the wedge at the bottom are missing. The wedge part is what is still in the fork steerer tube, probably stuck.

What do you think Trev?

If I'm right, you should be able to knock the wedge out of the tube from the bottom if you have something, possibly an old large screwdriver, or piece of steel tube that will reach it.

When you come to re-assemble it all, you will either need a long bolt and top cap, or a whole new quill - A-head adapter with all the parts.
