Crank not catching chainwheel? Help?

Not sure of the lingo, but I was just pedaling up a hill and suddenly my pedal just gave out.

I can pedal all I want but my chainwheel doesn't move.

I want to know if this just needs to be tightened or is it permanently broken?

I had to walk home

WOW!!! First thanks for sharing the video, I've never seen that before. Anyways I really think your chainwheel is toast! Now I maybe missing something here, as in do not take my reply as the concrete answer as there are others here that may have had this problem before! It looks like the weld on it broke loose.

Well I was going uphill and standing up pedaling..

but I thought welding was.. stronger?

for an amateur, is it a difficult piece to replace?

or expensive?

My bike is a Dynacraft Cliffrunner Ozone500..

Would it be cheaper to buy a new bike.. I got this one from Academy in 2009 for around $80

A replacement chainring set for an Mountain Bike should not really be all that expensive. Do you have a local bike shop near you?

You need something like this:

and a tool like this to remove your old one with out damaging the bottom bracket:

Note that there are many choices, and the above are just examples.

As long as the largest ring has the same number of teeth as your current part, you don't have to replace your chain, but replacing your chain is recommended.

I got a hold of Dynacraft and they are sending me another chainwheel/crank set for free.

Do you NEED a crank puller? Can I just use a ratchet set?

you can use a ratchet set and a crow bar, then you'll need to replace your bottom bracket as well, and possibly the frame.

Of course, you'll need more tools to get the bottom bracket out of the frame......

Yes you need the crank puller.

And a ratchet set is of minimal use for bicycle work.
