Suntour Mountech Freewheel Miyata 610
#1
Hello - I have a 1984 Miyata 610 with a 15-speed Suntour Mountech derailleur system. The freewheel is getting quite worn and I would like to replace it. It is the original Suntour 5-sprocket freewheel. Any hope? Or a similar part?

Any other 5 speed freewheel should fit, the hub thread will be the same, but you'll need a special tool to get the old freewheel off, probably a peg type like this for Suntour:

If it is the two peg type, be careful when removing the freewheel, they get very tight over time and it's quite easy to break the pegs off the tool. I suggest trying to get some penetrating oil, like liquid wrench, into the thread and letting it soak for a while before you attempt to remove it.

Here's some more information: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=48

You don't need a tool to put the new freewheel on, you can just thread it on by hand and the action of pedalling will tighten it fully. However, the threads are very fine, so take care not to get them crossed.

Hi - Can you recommend a web store where I could get a reasonably good quality 5-sprocket freewheel and the Peg Type Freewheel Remover Tool for my 1984 Suntour freewheel on the Miyata 610?

Thanks so much for the excellent tutorial, by the way.

I'm not sure if you can still get 5 speed freewheels. You could just replace with a 6 speed. They are (well, should be) compatible...
