Blocked part of bottom bracket during removal
#1
Hi,

I have removed my bottom bracket without any problem but the last piece (screws into the frame) is completely blocked.

I have managed unscrewing it a bit but now it is blocked. I can not get in or out anymore.

Penetrating oil combined with brute force does not seem to help.

Does anyone has an idea or a tool that can help me.
Sorry for the bad pictures but thats all I have for now...
Thanks

You may have done the job wrong ????
If the part left in is the one you've ringed in the top photo then that should be screwed out complete with the BB.
This thread is a left hand thread. It has to be screwed CLOCKWISE to undo with a special tool. !!
If you can get something to grip the remaining bit then hopefully you can get it to unscrew.

If you have nothing to get a hold of then try a LARGE rough file.
Jam the file inside the "sleeve" ,and using a wrench on the file, turn the file CLOCKWISE. Which hopefully will give enough grip to turn out the sleeve.

As a last resort, using a hacksaw blade, put some sawcuts spaced around the inside of the sleeve.
Try not to damage the threads of the shell.
Then using a chisel (old screwdriver) brake out the sections of the sleeve

The other side (plastic) is a normal right hand thread and screws out anti-clockwise which you have already done?.

See this video of how to do it properly:-

Hi ,

thanks for the reply.
I guess the piece was broken before (and the reason that I had to change it).
I will definitely try the things you mentioned, thanks! (and thumbs up please :-) )

If any other ideas please shoot!

thanks

antihero

edit: pouring hot water on it might be a good idea?

The idea behind the file is that as you turn it the teeth of the edges catch and dig into the softer metal of the sleeve. This then grips and hopefully helps with removal of the stuck part.
With quite small parts we have used the tang of a file to do the same.

Hooray!!! it worked with the file!!
thanks a lot, I would never had figured it out by myself.

The thread was intact and not rusty, its amazing how it could be so fixed...

thanks again,

Hi,
Really pleased that it worked.
These are the kind of "tricks" that you won't find in the manual.
I was "taught" this when I did my apprenticeship, (a long time ago LOL).
