Rear deraillure one gear off

Hello all,

I am new to biking and I just bought a Schwinn Sidewinder from wal-mart, which is where I believe my problem originates from. My gears are always one off. When I am in 6th gear on my twist shifter, the bike is actually in 7th, when in 5th, it is actually in 6th, ect. Any ideas on why it is doing this and how to fix it? Any information or links would be appreciated.

Probably just a straight forward cable adjustment.

From your description it sounds like you need to slacken the cable?
There is usually an adjuster on the rear dérailleur and sometimes also another one on the shifter or on the frame.

Follow the video tutorials. Cheap department store bikes are never set up correctly.

Just saying thanks, followed the directions and got the rear and front derailleur tuned. Saved 50 dollars and got to ride right after, rather than waiting several days for a shop to fix it. Great site.

Rear derailer adjustment (Even for regular cyclists) can be tricky - I recommend you find a friendly local bike shop that is friendly to repairs (Some aren't) and ask them to do it, if you are going to do a lot of cycling you will have a future need of good repair and parts supplier, as you get on, you will learn how to do many repairs yourself but starting of with rear derailer adjustment (I don't think) is a good way to start DIY repairs !
