Suntour VX Derailleurs
#1
Need to replace my worn top jockey wheel on my circa 1984 Suntour VX. I've seen the on video on this web site but there isn't a simple screw to release the jockey wheel, the only screw runs through the tension spring. I can't see how to remove the jockey wheel on the Suntour unit without disturbing the spring. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Does it look like this: http://www.velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=FC9AB947-7DA8-4836-8A27-4E2648EFFB19&Enum=108&AbsPos=9?

It does appear that the jockey wheel is mounted on the cage spring pivot, so it looks like you can't remove it without dismantling the spring mechanism.

It looks familiar, I think I might have had something similar on a road bike a few years back, it definitely had Suntour mechs and I remember lusting after much dearer Campangnolo components. I had the bike in question, my first proper bike, for a good few years and rode the wheels of it, so I'm sure I must have dismantled the rear mech at some point, but unfortunately I can't remember the details and how tricky it was to get back together.

Yes the picture is exactly like mine but with nice unworn jockey wheels!
Looks like I might need to invest in some 21st century deraillieur equipment

If you're prepared to by a new mech, why not have a go at disassembling and reassembling the one you have first, if you can't get it back together you will not have lost anything.

This exploded diagram of a similar Suntour Cyclone might help: http://www.yellowjersey.org/cyclone.html

However, I'm not sure where you'll find replacement jockey wheels, some of the Shimano ones are pretty cheap and may fit, but it's a bit of a gamble: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28108

I think the problem is removing the locking ring so that the spring isn't disturbed. I'll have a go thanks for your help.
