Gluing adjustable cup into bottom bracket
#1
Hi all

Stripped bottom bracket on a not so valuable frame, but worth the effort of making the adjustable cup permanent, but not wasting a mechanics time.

First question: Is there a need to file the mangled thread of the bottom bracket so that the adjustable cup fits snugly?

Secondly: In town I could purchase a "metal epoxy", but nowhere does it say for gluing metal to metal. Can anyone recommend a glue?

Any experience, tips offered will be most welcome.

Thanks in anticipation.

JB Weld might work ok and I wouldn't file out any more material than you have to to get the cup in. Note however that while I've seen this done before, it doesn't work very well and probably won't last long.

The better solution is one of the bottom brackets made for frames with bad threads. If you search "threadless bottom bracket" you should be able to find them starting around $20.

Dang Dave,
Never thought of the threadless BB. Pretty nice alternative though.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Thanks Dave and Bill

My local shop has one for £25, that is five times more than metal epoxy glue.

It has metal sleeves so seems quite robust and I imagine I could transfer it to another bike if I get fed up with the frame.
