SRAM X9 - Rear Derailleur Pulley - Wobbles
#1
Hello,

I have a Boarman Hybrid Pro (2010 Model - White http://road.cc/content/review/4160-boardman-urban-pro-ltd) and the I have had a lot of repairs on it recently.

After the latest repair I noticed the chain was wobbling from left to right more than what I expected. I bought it back to the bike shop but they gave me lip service on the cause and the repair for the problem.

With further inspecition I noticed that that both rear derailleur pulleys are wobbling and are loose. The model I have is a SRAM X9. See below for links to the model.

What I would like to know is whether I can repair these pulleys myself or should I purchase new pulleys or an entire derailleur set?

Thank you in advance,

Colum

Pulleys on rear derailleurs have to "wobble" a certain amount to function.

During your rides, does the RD function correctly?  Does it shift smoothly between gears?

If yes, there is nothing wrong.

If no, take it back to the shop, and insist that they take it for a test ride.

Yes, I use the SRAM X7. I replaced the pulleys when I noticed a skip (among other things) while riding. Afterwards, I would still get skips and even a stuck chain while riding. On close examination I noticed that there was a big lateral wobble left to right. That probably explained why the chain never stayed in one place and/or did not run smoothly. I traced it to the single pivot on the rear of the derailleur; there are two pivots in the front. Today, I just replaced my old derailleur with a new SRAM X7, which showed no wobble when it is on the bicycle. Seems fine on a test ride, but the real test is when I take it out for a longer ride. If worse comes to worse, consider changing out the derailleur.
