Sturmey Archer X-FD front wheel removal
#1
I have a flat and need to remove the front wheel to replace the inner tube, but I have no idea how to deal with this drum brake.

I've read in one of the threads that I may need a special tool...?

Please let me know if you have any advice.

We need pictures of your bike, both sides, around the front hub. There are several different mounting options for the SA X-FD - as mentioned in the PDF you linked to.

The over view is:
1. disconnect the cable from the arm extending out of the arm - the PDF suggests that this is simply a matter of moving the arm in the direction of apply the brake and removing the cable.
2. disconnect the other (reaction) arm from the fork.
3. unbolt the wheel normally.

But the devil is in the details - no pictures, no details.........

Referring to the picture above. At position 1; pull the black lever upwards to disengage the cable from the brake actuating lever. Then at 2; pull the adjuster upwards and out of the long black bracket. Finally, loosen the wheel wing nuts enough for the wheel to drop out - might have to be completely removed.

Please note that wing nuts like that are considered dangerous because they can be loosened by something hitting them.

Where did you purchase those glorious wing nuts, please ?
Are they still available ? I'm green with envy ! Must have some. Thank you.

Wing nuts on new bicycles' wheels were outlawed decades ago in the USA because they are EXTREMELY dangerous.

Indeed, they look dangerous. About ready to fly off and wing somebody !
If they were outlawed on new bikes, does that mean that they are o.k. on old bikes ? If I promise not to report you for the illegal possession of outlawed wingnuts, would you kindly advise where I can buy some ? Another option might be to send those outlawed wingnuts to me for safekeeping. I could send you the correct original nuts which go with that particular drum brake hub shown in the photo, especially since - age for age - the hub and the wingnuts are mismatched :-) Regards, Paul.
