Disc brake help needed

Can anyone tell me if you can use a front disc caliper on the rear of your bike?

Well, I am looking at two different bikes here with disc brakes, one hydro and one mech. Neither of them look front or rear specific. I can see any markings that would indicate that it must me used specifically.
