Scott Octane Front Derallieur?
#1
Hi all,

I've got a 2002 Scott Octane that was my Downhill rig and I'm now looking to change to a big trail bike (which is what it was designed to be in the first place). It's a pretty nice frame, easy to pedal (despite the plush shock) and it's reasonably light so it's ideal. It's this one:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=15585&PartnerID=2812&awc=2698_1282689564_e5f6a09487dddf6c037371192e269f3d

I'm thinking of putting a dual ring and bashguard combi on the front (to all intents and purposes it's a triple ring setup), however I'm stumped as to how to fit a derallieur to it. I know it's possible as the bike in this photo (which is the same frame as mine: http://www.schleupner.de/crashedandsold.html, sorry for the page not being in English, this is one of the few photos of a 2002 Octane I could find) has one fitted, and it doesn't look like a BB-mounted one. I don't want to use one of those anyway if I can avoid it as I'd like to fit a dual-ring chain device to it.

Anyone have any idea what type of derallieur that is? Or any suggestions as to what might be suitable? I'm not that fussed about performance, I have a Shimano Acera up front on my hardtail and that's perfectly fine in terms of performance.

Ugghh Jon very sweet frame! As for the derailler I honestly could not say.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Looks like a bottom bracket mounted E-Type to me, probably an XT to match the rear mech.

There are several available: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=658

Aw man, I was hoping it wasn't going to be one as that means I can't put a chain device on it.

I may just run a single ring if that's the case as where I ride and the sort of things I'm doing with this will require something to stop the chain falling off.

I thought chain devices only worked with single chainrings anyway.

In the last few years all the big players in the chainguide business (E-13, Blackspine, etc.) have brought out dual-ring chain devices that allow you to use a front mech with most of the benefits of a chain device.

However having just found this:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40530 I'm all sorted as I can bolt a specific derallieur (listed in the product description) onto the device and I will have two rings and a bashguard.

Perfect. I think that's me sorted.
