(So California) PV Dr to be closed to bikes (no joke)
#1
Palos Verdes Drive is to be closed to all bicycles. (see notice below)

The process is in place.   There is no talk of this being temporary.  I suggest going to the meeting (see quoted email).   Any arguments will fall on deaf ears as they have already decided.   But please go there and exchange contact information with others.  We need to ORGANIZE.   Even a million comments will do nothing.  What works is (1) actual legal action, not threats of it and (2) an actual recall campaign, not threats of it.    It only takes 30 signatures to start the recall process (but more to finish it)

Please reach out to anyone you know who rides a motorcycle too and especially to motorcycle clubs.

Cities have a legal requirement for public notice and this is the first step they need to check off, don't think for a minute they intend to actually listen.  They are closing the road because it is the lowest cost way to get out of a liability issue.  And of course, this is "finally" a way to get those annoying bikes (of all kinds) off "their" road.

This is a test. If they can close one road to bikes because the pavement is rough, then all they need to do is skip some maintenance and "presto" those annoying bikes can be gone for good. This is real. See the notice below.

You might also try and contact Ramzi Awwad (contact info below) and voice your opinion.

PLEASE forward the email below to as many places as you can, I would even try and post enlarged printed copies at bike shops

Of course, there are other solutions.  Put a Stop Sign at the crack in the road, place a big yellow sand-filled barrel over the crack, restripe the road, and reduce the speed limit to 5MPH over the damaged pavement.   Put a flagman there,...    But any suggestion will be ignored, you can see they have already started the process of closing the road.   It might be too late to prevent this.  We need to think about how best to organize to have the closure reversed.

Read the notice,  this is just the first road, this will be coming to a road near you, I am sure.

Subject: Palos Verdes Drive South (PVDS) Bicycle and Motorcycle Prohibition Notice

Dear Bike Community,

The City Rancho Palos Verdes would like to inform the Bike Community that the City will be considering prohibiting bicycles and motorcycles on Palos Verdes Drive South (PVDS) and an agenda item is planned to go before the RPV City Council on June 18, 2024.
* City staff and consultants are seeing rapid and substantial rates of movement (6 to 9 inches per week, depending on location) in and around the vicinity of the landslide area along Palos Verdes Drive South.
* Despite the warning signs in place, we are seeing injuries.
* Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking the City Council to consider prohibiting bicycles and motorcycles on PVDS.
* We are requesting the Bike Community to voluntarily consider alternate routes.

Please let us know if you have comments and questions regarding the above bicycle and motorcycle prohibition proposal.

Please contact:

Since bicycles have the legal status of any vehicle, it is probably illegal. They tried that it one of the gambling towns in Colo, and it got thrown out.

Yes in Colo when the gamblers took over several small towns with their casino's, it was either Central City or Blackhawk, that tried to close the main hiway thru town to cyclist. But a cycling group took it to the state Supreme Court, and it got thrown out.

Among other things it would ban someone that only has a bike to get around on. Therefore I hope again that a cycling group takes this nonsense to court, since they are almost guaranteed to win.

I think you've underplayed the problem with the poor road surface and, more importantly, the cause of the poor road surface. I could be wrong, but given that that section of the road is basically going to fall into the sea at some point, it might be a good idea to stay off it anyway.
