man bike weight

I'm looking for a mountain bike that's good for climbing and have noticed that full suspension mtn bikes are almost all about 30 pounds - unless I pay $6k. I recall that they used to be in the 26 pound range. Anyone know why they're getting heavier? 29" wheels?

It's a bit of paradox. If we look at road bikes it's all about the weight and getting those 50grams off - unmount all of those bottle cages On the contrary, mountain bikes have become heavier. I believe there are multiple factors leading to that. First must be that the manufacturers are making more durable and stiff frames (+the bearings have to be stronger) which has an affect on more weight. Even such thing as 180mm or 200m brake rotors vs the classic 160mm ones ... it adds grams. Can easily save half of kilo on wheels, but I'd choose stronger and more reliable wheels for mountain biking instead of weight saving. Lastly, heavier MTB doesn't instantly mean worse climbing experience, it can actually be better with thoughtful grame geometry, the right seat angle etc

those are just my observations and some takeaways from reading recent articles
