chain tangled

I was enjoying mountain bike morning ride to the fullest. Until at some point during nasty forest climb weird chain noises (crack n slide) forced me to jump off the bike. Took a quick look at the chain and it was tangled like "0". Ended up with black, greasy fingers and walked all the way home with my MTB. How do you quickly deal with a tangled chain? Thanks.
